This might be heresy, but I'd recommend also taking a look at http://lobste.rs. It looks like HN but is built on a different open-source platform. It supports email notifications out of the box, which is crucial in the early stages when your users haven't yet gotten into the habit of visiting your site.
All this is nothing arc+HN can't be modified to do, of course. But it doesn't right now.
